Message This is how you check the Mass Air Flow Sensor: (From ALLDATADIY.com, highly recommend you get a subscription)

Pull the rubber insulator back from the air flow meter connector.
Turn the ignition switch ON.
Using a volt meter, check voltage between terminal b and ground. Voltage should be approximately 0.8 vdc.
Start and warm the engine to operating temperature and then idle it.
Using a volt meter, check voltage between terminal b and ground. Voltage should be approximately 0.8 - 1.5 vdc. If the meter fails the above test, check the "hot wire" for dust or damage and replace the meter if necessary.

You'll need a digital voltmeter for this. The "B" terminal is the second terminal if you are looking at the connector from the front of the car. It's marked on the MAF connector. My MAF read .15 and it caused my Z to do exactly the same thing. The ECU never reported a problem.
Hope this helps!
